TCU finishes the weekend without allowing a point
FORT WORTH – TCU’s men’s tennis team completed its weekend sweep Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win over UTSA on a cool and overcast day at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
No. 67-ranked TCU improved to 3-1 with the win, while UTSA slipped to 0-1. The Horned Frogs have won all three meetings between the two programs all-time.
“I was happy with how we adjusted to the conditions because we haven’t played outdoors in a month,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “But we’ve got to be ready to go from the first point. With our schedule, we can’t wait until we’re four or five games into a match to really get going. All in all, it was a good two days and now we’ll get ready to face Texas A&M Corpus Christi.”
For the second-straight night, TCU captured the doubles point to open the match, this time with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Nick Chappell and Will Stein were first to win, making quick work of David Kelleher and Joel Rubio, 8-1.
After UTSA evened the doubles point with a win at No. 1 doubles, TCU’s No. 3 duo of Arnau Dachs and Orlando Superlano made it 1-0 in favor of the Frogs with an 8-3 win over Tyler Brown and Kolby Kilgo.
Facundo Lugones extended the lead to 2-0 when he took care of Brown, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Rodolfo Bustamante followed suit, grabbing a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles to give TCU a 3-0 advantage.
The No. 100-ranked Dachs clinched the match for the Frogs, knocking off Diogo Alves Casa, 6-3, 6-4 for his fourth win in as many tries this season. Superlano added TCU’s fifth point with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Kelleher at No. 5 singles.
In the two matches that went three sets, TCU was also victorious, coming from a set down in both matches. JT Sundling picked up a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (3) win over Rubio at No. 5 singles, while Chappell completed the Frog shutout with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Martin Ayala.
TCU returns to action Jan. 30 with a visit from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
