TexasCollegeTennis Men’s Rankings as of March 10, 2013

Here are the first TexasCollegeTennis.com Rankings for 2013. I have the men now and hope to get the women’s info updated tomorrow.

Only results versus D1 opponents could in the W/L and ranking. Only results that occurred by Sunday night (and reported by Monday night) are included.

I am not sure of a lot for these, so I am crowdsourcing. For one, I rewrote the program in a new language. Two, I have not taken the time to really nitpick the data and see if there are any mistakes too closely. If you see something that is wrong (as in number of wins or loses), please let me know.

Owls Bounce Back with 7-0 Blanking of UTA Women (Rice recap/box)

Host Tulane on Friday at Jake Hess

Elizabeth Schmidt’s 32nd ranked Rice women’s tennis team took charge early and closed with a pair of impressive comebacks to blank Texas Arlington 7-0 in a dual match at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday.

“It was good to see us set the tone by jumping out early,” Schmidt said. “UTA is the type of team that if you give them an opening, they can really push you. After the tough matches last weekend on the road, it was good to see us take command early. We made a lot of first serves and played the deciding points very well to not extend the games.”

Rice quickly grabbed the doubles point thanks to 8-1 wins at both 1 & 3. They continued that momentum into singles, clinching the match with wins by Solomiya Zinko, Katie Gater and Dominique Harmath. Liat Zimmermann added the Owls fifth point with a win on Court 5, but the final two points required rallies.

On Court 1, Natalie Beazant had cruised to a 6-1 win in the opening set, but just as quickly found herself down 5-1 to Brook Dennis in the second set. Facing the loss of the set, she battled back to win the next six games to take the match.

Kimberly Anicete dropped her second set to Giada D’Ortona but then closed out the day by taking the Super Tiebreaker 10-3.

“It was nice to see Natalie fight back from 5-1 down in her match and Kim played a great tiebreaker. D’Ortona is someone who has always played our team tough, and Kim responded well to the challenge, “ Schmidt added.

The Owls will be back on the Jake Hess courts on Friday when they host C-USA rival Tulane at 1 p.m.

TCU Men Take Care of UT Arlington, 7-0

Horned Frogs face UTSA tomorrow afternoon

FORT WORTH – TCU’s men’s tennis team rolled to a 7-0 win over UT Arlington on Friday evening in front of a packed crowd at the indoor facility of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 2-1 on the year, while UTA fell to 0-1. It was the 20th win in 21 tries for TCU against its nearby rival. The crowd was one of the largest for a TCU home opener in program history.

“I thought we did an excellent job of keeping our cool in the doubles when things got a little bit tight,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “We continued to control our thoughts in the big moments. That’s going to help us down the road this season. Now it’s about taking this momentum into tomorrow’s match and showing up with the same energy when we’re playing outdoors.”

The Frogs got things going with a 1-0 by taking all three of the doubles matches. After TCU jumped out to an early lead on the courts, UTA kept things interesting but it was Nick Chappell and Will Stein who struck first for TCU, scoring an 8-6 win over Sebastian Gomez and Soren Goritzka at No. 1 doubles.

Arnau Dachs and Orlando Superlano clinched the point for TCU with an 8-4 win over Marek Pesicka and Stefan Williams at No. 2 doubles. Max Stevens and JT Sundling provided the exclamation point with an 8-7 (3) win over Carlos Arbiza and Yauheni Yakuleu.

TCU wasted no time extending its lead in singles as No. 100-ranked Dachs raced to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Arbiza at No. 2 singles. It was Facundo Lugones who made it 3-0 in favor of the home team with a 6-3, 6-4 downing of Goritzka at the No. 3 slot.

Chappell clinched the match for TCU when he took care of Yakauleu, 6-4, 6-4, at the top singles court. Sundling extended the Frog onslaught to 5-0 with his 6-2, 7-6 (6) triumph over Sebastian Erimicioiu.

Superlano added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Williams at No. 5 singles for TCU’s sixth, while Rodolfo Bustamante clinched the shutout with an 8-7 (3) win over Pesicka at No. 6 singles, where a pro set was played in place of a three-set match.

TCU returns to action Saturday afternoon when UTSA visits the Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on the Bartzen Varsity Courts.

The entire double-run women’s ITA Rankings, as far as I can tell

OK, if they are not going to publish them, then I will go ahead and publish my own version. Again, the biggest issue is correcting the neutral matches that show up as away wins for teams. I manually corrected this for the top-51 teams in the April 24 rankings. Why 51? Not really sure myself. I thought it was enough to get us through the part where it gets dirty. The other issue is the fact you have to ‘make up’ the 76-125 file. I feel pretty good about where I am on this. So the bottom line is this… these are pretty darn close. Here you go. Of course I will follow up with more in a bit.

Ever wondered what the entire ITA rankings look like? Here are the men’s final rankings

This is not going to be 100% correct, but I can assure you it is pretty darn close. I do not think I am missing any matches. I have validated the database for all matches for teams that were in the top-50 last week. The biggest challenge was how to estimate the rankings from 76-125. I won’t disclose my methods, but I think it was pretty solid. I will post a a bit about the seeding and such.
