St. Edward’s men top Incarnate Word, captures Heartland title

The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team defeated the Cardinals of Incarnate Word Saturday morning in the Heartland Conference Championship, 5-2. The win give the Hilltoppers their sixth straight victory and places the team as a host for the South Central Regional Tournament.

St. Edward’s began with a tough loss in the No. 1 doubles match as junior Mick Walter and senior Boris Barrios were defeated by Francisco Segura and Jose Arizpe, 8-0. The Hilltoppers quickly rebounded as sophomore Ned Boone and senior Brett Powers downed Maxime Moreau and Alex Wieland, 8-4 in the No. 2 match. Senior duo of Justin Raiti and Bernie Lancaster gave the Hilltoppers the lead as they defeated Carlos Olvera and Aidan DeLeon, 8-6.

In singles action, Powers was downed in the No. 2 match by Moreau, 6-2, 6-4, evening the match at 2-2. The Hilltoppers bounced back as three seniors pushed their matches to three sets to take the three necessary points for the Hilltoppers. Raiti defeated Arizpe in the No. 3 match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 5 match, Barrios defeated Olvera, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 6 match, Lancaster clinched the match as he defeated David Ballenger, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Hilltopper Head Coach Russell Sterns felt great about the victory and couldn’t be happier by stating, “Incarnate Word has a great team, the matches were so close that we split five out of six meaning the team really pulled through, especially our seniors. This gives us a six game win streak giving us the opportunity to host a regional.”

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday May 7th as they host the South Central Regional Tournament.

Incarnate Word women edge St. Ed’s, 5-4

The St. Edward’s women’s tennis team was edged by Heartland Conference rival, Incarnate Word, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.

St. Edward’s (7-9, 2-1 HC) began the day’s action with two important wins in doubles. The Hilltoppers gained their first point with freshman Paige Rachel and sophomore Audrey Tompkins defeating Adrianna Hernandez and Gretchen Trautmann, 9-8. In the No. 2 match, sophomore Mary Bain and senior Elizabeth Jacobi extended the Hilltopper lead after they defeated Erica Engberg and Alex Adams, 8-6. In the final doubles match, senior Caryn McGraw and sophomore Heather Brien were defeated by Stephanie Rodriguez and Karen Rodriguez, 8-3.

In singles action, Rachel defeated Hernandez in the No. 1 match, 7-5, 6-1. In the No. 2 match, Tompkins was defeated by Stephanie Rodriguez in three hard fought sets. Rodriguez took the first set, 6-2. Tompkins fought back to take the second set, 6-4. In the final set, Tompkins was edged, 7-6 in a tiebreaker. In similar action, Bain was defeated by Trautmann in the No. 3 match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Jacobi was also pushed to three sets in the No. 4 match, as she was defeated by Engberg, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Brien followed with a Hilltopper point in the No. 5 match after defeating Adams, 6-2, 6-2. In the final match for the win, McGraw battled Karen Rodriguez. McGraw took the first set, 4-6, though Karen Rodriguez pulled away with the final two sets, 6-3, 6-0.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action April 5th as they travel to take on Houston. First-serve is set for noon.

Incarnate Word men edge St. Ed’s, 5-4

The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team was edged by Heartland Conference rival, Incarnate Word, 5-4 Friday afternoon at the Emmett Strohmeyer Varsity Courts.

St. Edwards (6-8, 2-1 HC) started in doubles action with senior Justin Raiti and sophomore Ryan Wiggins defeating Carlos Olvera and Aiden DeLeon, 8-2 in the No. 3 match. Sophomore Ned Boone and senior Brett Powers paired up in the No. 2 match to defeat the 26th ranked team of Maxime Moreau and Alex Wieland, 8-4. Senior Boris Barrios and junior Mick Walter were just edged by Francisco Segura and Jose Arzipe in the No. 1 match, 8-6.

In singles action Boone took the first point as he defeated the 29th ranked Segura in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. Lancaster matched off against Olvera in the No. 5 match but was defeatd in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Walter pushed the 41st ranked Wieland to three sets as Walter dropped the first set, 6-2. Walter fought to take the second set, 7-5 though Wieland was able to pull away in the third set, 6-2. Raiti battled the 49th ranked Arizpe in the No. 3 match. Raiti took the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 though Arizpe was able to score 6-2 in the following two sets to take the point. The 42nd ranked Powers took the first set against Moreau in the No. 2 match, 6-3. Powers kept the following set close as Moreau took the second set, 6-4. Moreau pulled away in the final set to take the match-winning point, 6-0. Barrios took the final Hilltopper point in the No. 6 match against Pierce Brandan, 6-2, 6-2.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Waco to take on Baylor. First-serve is set for 6 p.m.

St. Edward’s women capture Heartland Conference Championship, win streak reaches 10

SAN ANTONIO – The 21st-ranked St. Edward’s women’s tennis team avenged a loss in last year’s conference tournament as they defeated #30 Incarnate Word, 5-3, in the Heartland Conference Championship Match Saturday morning at the UIW Tennis Center.

St. Edward’s (16-6) got things going in the right direction in doubles play as they took two of three matches. Senior Regina DelBosque and freshman Audrey Tompkins defeated Sarah Carswell, along with Erica Engberg, 8-4, at the number one position. Freshmen Heather Brein and Alexandra Henry bested Cisse Drame and Karen Rodriguez, 9-7, at the number three position.

In single play, Tompkins, Henry and Mary Bain all had straight-set victories Saturday morning and that clinched the match and conference title for the Hilltoppers.

Last season, St. Edward’s fell to Incarnate Word in the championship match.

The Hilltoppers are currently in position to qualify for the NCAA Regionals with a #3 ranking as of today. They will have to wait and see if they move up to one of the top two spots where they could host one of the subregionals May 7-9.

Incarnate Word, Tyler JC Split Men, Women

The Tyler Junior College tennis teams split with The University of the Incarnate Word today in San Antonio.  The men won 6-3, while the women lost 7-2.
