Sophomores Robert Sajovich and Michelle Hagler of The University of Texas at Tyler tennis teams were named East Division Men’s & Women’s Tennis Players of the Week by the American Southwest Conference on Wednesday afternoon.
The honor is the second of the season for Sajovich and the fifth for the men, while it is the first weekly award of 2009 for Hagler, but the sixth for the UT Tyler women.
Sajovich (Austin, Texas) went 2-1 in singles action last week and 3-0 in doubles, both at the No. 2 positions. Sajovich earned the lone team point in UT Tyler loss to 2nd-ranked Washington-St. Louis and earned two of three Patriot points in the match against No. 24 Chicago.
Hagler (Austin, Texas) also had outstanding week as she went 3-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. Hagler recorded singles wins over Ozarks, Principia and No. 12 Washington-St. Louis, while her only loss on the week came at the hands of Washington in doubles action.
Both Patriots played key roles in helping their respective teams clinch an East Division title on Thursday with duplicate 9-0 wins at Ozarks.
On Saturday, both UT Tyler teams will be in semifinal action at the 2009 ASC Tennis Championships. The men will take the courts at 8:30 a.m. at McMurry in Abilene, followed by the women at 11 a.m.
