STEPHENVILLE – The 36th-ranked St. Edward’s women’s tennis team pulled off the upset over the #31 Tarleton State, winning 6-3 in a key South Central Region matchup.
St. Edward’s (11-8) gained a one point advantage after doubles play where it picked up victories at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Hilltopper senior Audrey Tompkins (Katy, Texas/Taylor HS) and freshman Alexandra Khadzhyan (Murmansk, Russia/Murmansck Secondary) defeated Karla Martinez and Melanie Barnes, 8-6 in a hard fought match. Another freshman-senior combination headlined the No. 3 doubles match for St. Edward’s where Francesca Chohor (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) and Mary Bain (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) took down Silvia Nieva and Kayla Deatherage, 8-2.
With a 2-1 advantage heading into singles competition, the Hilltoppers earned points winning at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to complete a 6-3 victory over Tarleton State. Audrey Tompkins ousted Melanie Barnes at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4, in route to her 12th win of the season. At No. 4 singles Rafaela Haegele (Scheneberdigen, Germany/Otto-Hahn Gymnasium) coasted her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nieva. St. Edward’s right-hander Mary Bain contributed to the win by winning her three-set match against Makenzi Mitchell, 6-7, 6-4, 10-4. Last but not least, senior Heather Brien (College Station, Texas/A&M-Consolidated) cruised past Deatherage, 6-0, 6-2, earning her 10th win of the year.
The Hilltoppers return back to action Friday morning where they host a doubleheader match-up against # 26 Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian. The Central Oklahoma match will be hosted at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts at 10:00 A.M. and the Oklahoma Christian match will follow at 2 p.m.
