Longhorns defeat Hilltoppers in final non-conference match, await Texas A&M in Saturday’s State Farm Lone Star Showdown.
AUSTIN – No. 17 Texas (15-7) claimed the doubles point and added five singles wins en route to a 6-1 victory over St. Edward’s Wednesday evening at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas opened the doubles session by winning two of three matches to claim the doubles point. Soren Hess-Olesen and Jacoby Lewis led off with an 8-2 win at second doubles over the Hilltoppers’ Pedro Bronstrup and James Rogers. The Horns clinched the doubles point at third doubles, where Alex Hilliard and Joey Swaysland finished off Jonathan Stockdale and Ryan Wiggins, 8-4. The Hilltoppers claimed the remaining match at first doubles.
Texas assumed a 2-0 lead when Hilliard notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ivan Vaz at sixth singles. Ben Chen pushed the Horns’ lead to 3-0 with his 6-0, 6-0 win over Wiggins at fourth singles, and Lloyd Glasspool clinched the Texas victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rogers at third singles.
Swaysland extended the Texas lead to 5-0 with his 6-0, 6-3 win over Adrian Garza at fifth singles. Whitehead staked Texas to a 6-0 lead when he outlasted the Hilltoppers’ Bencke at second singles, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). The Toppers’ Ned Boone edged UT’s Holiner in a third-set super-tiebreaker at first singles.
Texas resumes conference play on Saturday, April 14 when it hosts Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. The match will be televised live on Longhorn Network with first serve set for 6:07 p.m. Central.

This was a match I thought we needed. We got pushed in some spots tonight, which was good. I thought St. Edward’s played well in some spots. We have a couple more days to get ready for our next match, and we’re getting more guys out there in practice. Hopefully, we can start to play our best tennis here down the stretch.
