SEATTLE – The Texas A&M women’s tennis team concludes its season-opening five-match road swing Sunday as the No. 31 Aggies face No. 27 Washington at the Huskies’ Nordstrom Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. (1 p.m. CT), and live scoring of the match will be available at AggieAthletics.com.
The No. 31 Aggies won their third consecutive match and improved to 3-1 after disposing of Fresno State, 5-2, Friday in Fresno. A&M swept the doubles point for the second time this season and then won four of six singles matches to secure the victory.
Fourteenth-ranked Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar remained undefeated in singles with her straight-set victory at the No. 2 line. The Aggies also got singles victories from Wen Sun, Janine Erasmus and Janelle Cuthbertson, who returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a leg injury in the season opener and notched the win that gave the Aggies a 4-0 lead against the Bulldogs.
The Huskies are 4-1 entering today’s match against Portland. Led by 18th-ranked Denise Dy, who is 5-0 at the No. 1 line, Washington has already posted three wins against top 50 opponents.
A&M is 2-0 in the all-time series against the Huskies with the last completed match occurring in 2008. The teams attempted to faceoff last year in College Station, but the match was canceled when a steady light rain made the courts unplayable. No. 30 A&M had taken a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point and had won three of the four first sets against the 21st-ranked Huskies when play was suspended.
A&M first-year head coach Howard Joffe is familiar with the Washington program, as his former Maryland squad was knocked out in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Championship by last years’ Huskies team.
The Aggies finally make their home season debut Friday, Feb. 24 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Match time has been changed to 1:30 p.m. The Aggie men’s team takes on TCU at 6 p.m. that same day, and one ticket is good for both matches.
Season tickets and individual tickets to home matches can be purchased in advance online at AggieAthletics.com or by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at 1-888-99-AGGIE. Tickets also can be purchased at the entrance to the tennis center begin one hour before the start of the match.
