St. Ed’s men upset DI UTSA, 4-3

The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team defeated the Division I Roadrunners of UT-San Antonio for their first win of the season

St. Edward’s (1-1) sophomore transfer Ned Boone won the deciding match at No. 1 singles to clinch an upset win over Division 1 rival-UTSA Roadrunners. With the matches all tied up at three apiece and the outcome of the day in the balance, Boone broke Ayala’s serve at love late in the third set with a blistering forehand to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Ryan Wiggins won at No. 6 over Hugo Guanais, 6-2, 6-4, and junior Mick Walter won at No. 5 over Pedro Zanotelli, 7-6, 1-0 retired. For the 2nd time St. Edward’s has won the doubles point winning two of the three pro set doubles matches. Senior Brett Powers and Boone won at No. 3 doubles, 8-4 while No. 2 doubles senior Boris Barrios and Walter fought back from being down 7-5 to clinch the double point, 9-7.

Coach Sterns was ecstatic on the victory, “It was just a great effort from everyone. To beat a team as good as UTSA is a good indicator that this team may enjoy a special season. Our doubles, as usual, looks very strong and having Englishman Ned Boone at the No. 1 slot and capable of beating anyone on a given day just makes our entire lineup solid from top to bottom.”

The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team will travel to San Antonio February 16th to take on Trinity. The first serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
